The best way to combating crime is to properly enforcing our existing laws. Some people believe you deter crime by adding new laws and regulations, but criminals will be more effectively discouraged by proper administration of the laws that already exist. Although there should be stricter penalties for violent crimes, we should work to keep those who violate drunk driving or drug laws from clogging our prisons in exchange for treatment and diversion programs. It is much too expensive and dangerous to let violent offenders out of prison in order to make room for a drunk driver or drug addicted offender. We must stand firm by making sure dangerous criminals and repeat offenders fill our prisons - instead of non-violent lawbreakers.
